My name is Julia, and I am by training and practice a microbiologist. I had worked 3 years in the frontlines in biological research in areas such as antibiotics, tuberculosis, and various genetics. I am currently finishing my undergraduate education in the University of Dundee and have partnered with Chambers Tutoring to provide tutoring in the sciences, fuelled with my first-hand experience in research.
My passion in biology began as a kid. From a young age, I had interests in marine biology and entomology, fuelling a passion for science. With this passion, I would participate in many competitions to represent my school in the area of science, mathematics and even philosophy. At the age of 14, I found a particular interest in bioluminescence, the light that we see from fireflies. Understanding the biology of this process has led to me my further interest in bioluminescence produced in bacteria.
Driven by this passion, I worked independently at home to grow and cultivate the bacteria from supermarket squid. Many of these home experiments gave me a deep understanding of the science of household items, as well as how my knowledge from high school had applied in all aspects of life. I had previously done various teaching schemes as a final year university student supervisor, a returning student lecturer for my secondary school, as well as personal tutoring for families in primary education. As a biologist, I believe that my job isn’t just to do research, but to educate the public and pioneering a new generation of young scientists.
My teaching aims to focus on developing an understanding and appreciation for the sciences and their application in everyday life such as in cooking. I am able to use basic household items to conduct small experiments to describe and teach science to students in an engaging manner as much as is safe and possible.
I had also shared my experience with the wider community and had volunteered at a social organization aimed at teaching children and adults alike the importance and beauty of the natural world around us through agriculture and wildlife. I had used my understanding of the natural world to encourage scientific learning amongst children and adults alike through workshops, events and festivals held at the organization where I had volunteered as various roles including cooking and farming staff, store and workshop management.
Akin to, yet so differently similar to David and John, I am into sports but not the traditional kind; I am a coach for Rainbow 6 Siege Esports and had previously played Pokémon competitively as well. I write occasionally to my website (www.jsoh.weebly.com) on articles and issues surrounding the world at my interest.
