History

Picture from the Great War (1914-1918) – otherwise known as World War 1, this is often studied in SQA History exams

History is a beautiful subject – the art of looking into the past and analysing the facts and opinions of the time. It is the gateway to the important debates and protests that we see nowadays throughout the world and the reason for many current affairs. It is a very detailed subject and one that a lot of students take interest in. And if you are looking for history tutoring which will prepare your child for their exams, you have reached the right place.

History Tutoring – what can we do?

With some our other subjects, basing our approach off your child’s schoolwork is beneficial. When it comes to our history tutoring, it truly is the only option. The SQA history exams cover a vast array of topics in an attempt to be ‘one size fits all’ exam papers. We need to work off the material that your child has been learning in class to avoid confusing them and to properly support them.

National 5 History Exam

At their core, the SQA National 5 History exams are, as you would expect, very similar. Your child will be asked to analyse many sources in ‘How fully’, ‘How useful’, and ‘Source Comparison’ questions on both levels. We will go through the best way to tackle each of these question types and do a lot of practice of structuring these answers correctly.

Higher History Exam

In the Higher exam, there are actually only two parts which sounds like a lot less work. The reason for this is that while one of these two sections is a source-focused question paper where the same techniques used in National 5 are used again, the other changes things. In the second part, you will be asked to write an essay based on previous knowledge and understanding. These essays will come from a set list so practicing these is key and we will do everything we can to improve your child’s essay writing.

Assignments

Speaking of essays, one of these that your child will have to write isn’t even the one in the exams. Before even the prelim, they will have to begin working on an assignment. This is an independent study on an area of history which links to their course. After drafting practices with the help of their teacher, there will be a time in which they must write their assignment, using the help of a history resource sheet (which your child must prepare) but under exam conditions.

About our History Tutoring

It is important to know that, when it comes to the assignment, neither teacher nor ourselves are able to provide model answers or even set the essay questions for these assignments.. This goes against SQA code of conduct and would taint the entire exam process.

Our history tutoring is designed to point your child in the right direction and work with them, with integrity, through their problems without handing them the answers. We firmly believe this is the both the best and the correct way to work.

We might be that final missing boost that your child needs in their history qualifications so contact us to arrange a meeting if you feel this would be useful. We can assure you that it will be.
