Geography

Geography Tutoring is about more than just where the countries are. But we want to teach this as it is shocking the number of students who have no idea of the layout of the world.

Geography can be a very useful and versatile subject and has many skills which can be of use in other areas of the curriculum as well as completely outside of learning. Map skills, reading graphs, analysing sources and structuring answers are all pivotal. It is in fact sometimes accepted as a science by universities, although this does vary between different institutions. Regardless, you should definitely consider us for geography tutoring.

Our Geography Tutoring

We will do our best to tailor our approach based on what your child is currently studying in class and what they need most support with in the subject. Whether this be their map-reading or their understanding of graphs, we are here to help with these common problems. A lot of students have a hard time reading maps and it is something that takes time to improve, but we are willing to take that time if required.

We will also practice answering all manner of questions based again on their current work in the classroom. We can do this under timed conditions to better prepare your child for the exam if need be as well so we can cater for all young geography students.

‘Where is?’ – General Geography Tutoring

A common criticism of geography within the school curriculum is ‘we never learned where countries were, it was all just weather and stuff.’ Well, we are more than happy to teach more general geography as well, especially for younger students who are not yet at exam level and therefore can gain an advantage in the subject. We are also happy to study flags if this is also of use to your child. Geography is about way more than just what the schools teach and we can be the missing link which will plug that gap in your child’s knowledge.

Assignment

At National 5 and Higher Level, much like in History, Geography asks you to write an assignment. This is an essay that must be written in an allotted time limit with the aid of pre-prepared source sheets which must be made by the student. We are unable to set the question or mark previous attempts of your child’s assignment as per the rules in the SQA course guidelines.

But our geography tutoring can still help without giving the answers away. We can answer any questions and settle any doubts your child is feeling about the assignment and work on essay structure (without specifically working on their assignment itself; it must be done independently)

Geography Exams

Geography exams are a case of explaining, understanding and evaluating information. The knowledge itself must be revised as your child will be asked about certain processes like glaciation for example. Once they know this, we can then work on the terms to use when explaining the process in the exam.

When it comes to graphs, your child may be asked very statistical questions, but also to explain why those statistics are the way they are. This requires more than just reading the graphs and there must be some effort put into linking the numbers with the real-life situations according to the problem they are asked about. Practice makes perfect, and our geography tutoring will focus on making connections as much as possible when it comes to graphs. This is not a maths exam and you will always need to go deeper than just the numbers themselves.
