French tutoring is Eilidh’s speciality. French is one of the major three languages that is commonly taught in Scottish public schools and is also a key part of private education.
We would like to explain the subject matter that we teach but please note that we will base our teachings on what is currently being taught to your child in school. This prevents us from overloading them with knowledge and information and stops us confusing them in an already tricky subject to start learning.
French Tutoring from the start
Chambers Tutoring offers French tutoring sessions right from the very beginning of the subject. Yes, you can learn French without even studying it at school! We can start with the absolute basic ‘tourist’ French – the phrases you will most commonly hear in films and on TV shows whenever French language is used on UK programming. This is in order to mirror the start of the French language curriculum in public schools as we see no need to rush through the starting blocks of the language.
Once your child has a very basic understanding of French and France itself, we will move on to covering the numbers up to ten, the days of the week, the months of the year and the alphabet. This beginners stage of French tutoring is more about becoming used to the words and the language and less about being able to write it correctly or knowing how to use it. Baby steps, little but often is the key to success when learning a language.
If your child is in need of something slightly more advanced, we can cover common junior secondary school topics like food, television, colours, music, movies and much more. This will hopefully build a decent-sized vocabulary bank which can be used in basic sentences which we will also support. Basic verb and noun sentences, nothing too complicated until your child is confident to advance.
You may also be in need of more complicated support i.e. National 5 or Higher SQA qualifications. Luckily for you, we can do that as well! We conduct regular speaking practice sessions and will test your child’s understanding of the language using our own resources or those provided by their school. We encourage French to become more a conversation at this level but we will never give instructions in French alone – we will always explain the task set in English.
