Moira Thomson – Dyslexia Specialist

Moira Thomson MBE was Principal Teacher of Support for Learning at Broughton High School, Edinburgh from 1975 – 2006.  During that time she held concurrent posts as:  Development Officer & in-house Professional Development provider for City of Edinburgh Dept of Children & Families; Associate Tutor, the Scottish Network for Able Pupils; Associate Assessor for HMIe; a member of Scottish Qualifications Authority focus groups on (i) accessible exam papers (ii) disability equality.

In addition, she was Secretary of the Scottish Parliament’s Cross Party Group on Dyslexia (2006-2011) and a member of Scottish Government Schools Directorate advisory group on Dyslexia.  She was involved in the early stages of the development of the Assessing Dyslexia Toolkit funded by the Scottish Government and has contributed several articles to Dyslexia Voice and other specialist publications.   She has been a guest speaker at Dyslexia Scotland and BDA International conferences several times and over the years has also made many presentations at events for local authorities, schools and parent groups.

She is currently an Independent Adjudicator (Dispute Resolution Additional Support for Learning) for the Scottish Government; an educational consultant to DysGuise Ltd; a Dyslexia Scotland registered assessor; and a Fellow of the College of Teachers.

She was a committee member of Dyslexia Scotland South-East for many years during which she volunteered in an advisory capacity to other dyslexia organisations and parent groups.  She was awarded an MBE in 2014.
